Home SMA Inverters

altSMA Technologie AG was founded as an independent company out of Kassel's University in 1981  with the vision to develop and produce intelligent computer-based control  systems for decentralized energy supply. This vision resulted in sophisticated  products that are fail-safe and extremely reliable especially since an energy  supply system has to guarantee long-term trouble-free operation.

Due to their know-how from 20 years of experience in the development and  fabrication of system technology for photovoltaic, wind energy and combined  power generation plants, the continuous product improvements and the use of  absolutely new technologies has made SMA a pioneer in the field of solar  technology. The close cooperation with the ISET (Institut für Solare  Energieversorgungstechnik) in the field of research resulted in innovations  that have set standards specifically for decentralized power supply systems.
SMA is certified to DIN ISO 9001:2000. In addition to this, SMA also has  numerous product-specific certificates. Copy of this certificate can be found on the attached CD in the folder named  Certifications.
The SMA Sunny Boy inverter is a worldwide market leader in the field of  innovative device technology for the use of renewable energy sources. Private,  commercial and institutional owners of solar power plants rely on SMA’s Sunny  Boy photovoltaic inverters and their numerous possibilities of a wide range of  different communication and monitoring systems. Due to the ultramodern  electronics manufacturing SMA ensures quality, reliability, and up-to-date  technology of the components that are being developed. SMA’s long-standing  experience in the field of power electronic components and computer-based  systems guarantees top quality and highly efficient inverters.
The Sunny Boy family of inverters is a  technically mature device, which is currently the most advanced modular PV  system technology available for connecting PV systems to the grid. SMA  inverters distinguish themselves particularly by their high levels of  efficiency, reliability and the ease with which they can be operated in  parallel with other inverters. In addition the inverters conform to the  electromagnetic tolerance regulations and the low voltage regulations of the  relevant combined European norms, as confirmed in the CE conformity declaration  available on the attached CD in the  folder named Certifications.
All SMA inverters are all equipped with a  grid guard. This is a type of disconnection device that will disconnect the  inverter from the grid if there is a power failure. It ensures that all  inverters comply with the German Electricity Industry Association -VDEW –  regulations for the connection and parallel operation of electrical power units  to the low voltage grid of the electricity supply company and with DIN VDE  0126-1-1, which forms part of these regulations.
In addition to this, the inverters are  installed with ground fault monitoring and overvoltage protection devices. Also  all transformer less inverters are equipped with a leakage current measuring  device. All these devices will safe guard both the equipment and user from  potential damages and harm respectively.
The inverter is also supplied with a specifically designed Electronic  Solar Switch (ESS). This dc circuit breaker for solar inverters allows the  inverter to be safely disconnected from the PV array, even in a faulty system.  Without this electronic solar switch the removal of the dc plug can cause  arcing, which may cause personal injury and damage to the inverter. This  ingenious device is in the shape of a handle and is assembled on the underside  of the inverter. After switching off the ac side, this handle is pulled out to  switch off the PV array input to the inverter. Once pulled out the dc plug can  be safely removed. The handle is small and can be easily carried anywhere thereby minimizing the risk that someone else will switch it on again. The user  manual of this device can be found in the CD in the folder named Manuals.
Each SMA inverter has an illuminated  display installed on its front cover. The display shows the most important  operational information such as energy generated, performance etc and fault  codes of the inverter.
SMA stress that  their inverters and other products may only be installed by trained  specialists. We have been trained by SMA themselves in the design and  installation of PV systems. The training for RECOWATT personnel was conducted  at SMA plant in Germany.
